Your Breast Lift with Dr. Guy Cappuccino

If you’ve begun to feel as though your breasts are drooping or sagging in a way that has negatively impacted your appearance or sense of self-confidence, a breast lift at Guy Cappuccino MD Plastic & Reconstructive surgery can be the perfect way to restore your ideal feminine curves. A breast lift in Maryland can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.

If your breasts are small or have lost volume—for example, after pregnancy—breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size. The Best Candidates for A Breast Lift

The best candidates for a breast lift are women who are generally healthy, and have realistic expectations about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts. If this is the case for you, Dr. Cappuccino will work with you to explore your options.

Many women seek mastopexy because pregnancy and nursing have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their breasts. However, if you're planning to have more children, it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift. While there are no special risks that affect future pregnancies (for example, mastopexy usually doesn't interfere with breastfeeding), pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and offset the results of the procedure.

Planning Your Breast Lift Procedure

Your initial consultation for a breast lift in Maryland will be the ideal opportunity to discuss your expectations frankly with Dr. Cappuccino and to listen to his opinion. Dr. Cappuccino prides himself on bringing an exceptional level of ethical integrity to the table, and he’ll let you know if he believes that there is a better way to achieve your desired results.

Dr. Cappuccino will examine your breasts and take measurements before discussing the variables that may affect your procedure—such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin—and whether an implant is advisable.

You should also discuss where the nipple and areola will be positioned; they'll be moved higher during the procedure and should be approximately even with the crease beneath your breast. Don't hesitate to ask Dr. Cappuccino any additional questions you may have.

Exploring the different types of breast lifts

Because every woman’s body is unique, a single approach to mastopexy would not be sufficient to address the numerous concerns that patients face in regard to their figures. Below, we will explore the four most common breast lift techniques, which are designed to correct different levels of ptosis.

The Crescent Lift

This approach is primarily used for patients who are undergoing mastopexy in tandem with breast augmentation and who are suffering from minimal breast ptosis.

  • Incision – A Crescent Lift relies on a moon-shaped incision that curls around the top half of the areola. Scars are nicely hidden within the area’s darker pigments.
  • Degree of ptosis correction – The Crescent Lift is perfect for addressing minimal breast sagging.
  • Combination with other procedures – The Crescent Lift is primarily performed with breast augmentation, providing the patient with comprehensive improvement in the breasts’ shape, size, and projection while also correcting asymmetry.

The Periareolar Lift

The Periareolar Lift, also called a “Doughnut Lift”, is effective for patients with mild breast ptosis who are simultaneously undergoing breast augmentation. If needed, the procedure can reduce areola size as well.

  • Incision – With this approach, the surgeon makes a single incision completely encircling the outer edge of the areola.
  • Degree of ptosis correction – A Periareolar Lift can correct mild breast sagging.
  • Combination with other procedures – Like the Crescent Lift, the Periareolar Lift is often chosen when the patient wishes to undergo a combination augmentation and lift procedure.

The Lollipop Lift

The Lollipop Lift (Vertical Lift) is among the most commonly performed breast lift techniques. It is generally recommended for patients with a moderate amount of breast sagging.

  • Incision – The first incision encircles the areola and the second incision runs down the breast vertically, creating the appearance of a lollipop.
  • Degree of ptosis correction – A Lollipop Lift is a good choice for women with a moderate amount of breast sagging.
  • Combination with other procedures – The lollipop technique is seldom used when a breast lift is paired with breast augmentation. However, it may be utilized when the patient undergoes breast reduction in tandem with mastopexy.

The Anchor Lift

The Anchor Lift, also called an “Inverted T” Lift, is ideal for women with significant breast ptosis. The anchor-shaped incision pattern affords the surgeon the most flexibility and precision when it comes to reshaping the breasts. This approach is the most common solution when mastopexy is combined with breast reduction.

  • Incision – The first incision encircles the areola, the second incision stretches down the breast vertically, and the third incision extends along the breast crease, creating the appearance of an anchor.
  • Degree of ptosis correction – The Anchor Lift is well-suited for those with more significant breast sagging.
  • Combination with other procedures – The Anchor Lift is the best choice for patients undergoing a combination breast lift and breast reduction.

The Day of Your Breast Lift Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you will need a friend, helper, or family member to drive you home, so it is a good idea to schedule this person ahead of time. Make sure to prepare your living environment for recovery and fill any prescriptions early. Choose loose, comfortable, button-down clothing on the day of your appointment. A breast lift in Maryland usually takes one and a half to three and a half hours. Techniques vary, but our most common procedure involves a vertical incision from below the areola to the breast fold.

The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola and in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area.

After Your Procedure

After surgery, you'll wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. Your breasts might be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for a day or two, but the pain shouldn't be severe. Any discomfort you do feel can be relieved with medications prescribed by Dr. Cappuccino. Within 24 hours, the bandages or surgical bra will be removed and you may shower. You will continue to wear a  soft support bra. You'll need to wear this bra around the clock for three to four weeks. The stitches will dissolve.

Specially designed scar management dressings will be applied at your follow-up appointments.  These dressings called Embrace minimize the scarring and speed the healing process. If your breast skin is very dry following surgery, you can apply a moisturizer several times a day. Be careful not to tug at your skin in the process, and keep the moisturizer away from the suture areas. You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin, caused by the swelling after surgery. This numbness usually fades as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks or so. In some patients, however, it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent.

Potential Risks from a Breast Lift

A breast lift is a complex procedure, but it's safe when performed by a highly experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Guy Cappuccino. His extensive experience significantly reduces the risk of complications or adverse reactions to anesthesia. While bleeding and infection are rare, they can affect scar healing. Following Dr. Cappuccino’s pre and post-surgery advice will help minimize these risks.

The breast lift will leave permanent scars, but they are easily concealed by a bra or bathing suit. (Smokers may experience poorer healing and wider scars.)

Some breast asymmetry or a loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts may occur. Dr. Cappuccino will thoroughly discuss all aspects of the procedure during your consultation, ensuring you feel confident in your decision and the expected results.

Getting Back to Normal

Healing is a gradual process. Although you may be up and about in a day or two, don't plan on returning to work for at least a week, depending on how you feel. You’ll need to avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. If you have any unusual symptoms, don't hesitate to call Dr. Cappuccino.

You’ll be given detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities. You may be instructed to avoid sex for a week or more and to avoid strenuous sports for about a month. After that, you can resume these activities slowly. If you become pregnant, the operation should not affect your ability to breastfeed, since your milk ducts and nipples will be left intact.

Your New Look

Dr. Cappuccino makes every effort to minimize scarring, but it's important to remember that mastopexy scars are extensive and permanent. They often remain lumpy and red for months, then gradually become less obvious, sometimes eventually fading to thin white lines. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops. You should also keep in mind that a breast lift won't keep you firm forever: The effects of gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight fluctuations will eventually take their toll again. Women who have implants along with their breast lift may find the results last longer. To learn more, reach out to Dr. Cappuccino’s Mount Airy office and set up your consultation today.

How much will a breast lift cost?

The cost of a breast lift procedure by Dr. Cappuccino is generally around $9,100, but it can vary based on factors such as geographical location, and individual patient needs after your consultation.

Will scars be noticeable after a breast lift?

Dr. Cappuccino’s precision-oriented, detailed approach ensures that all incisions are well-hidden within the inframammary folds and the darker pigments of the areolas. Scars slowly fade over time and can be improved through the use of medical-grade scar creams prescribed by the doctor.

Are there risks connected to breast lift surgery?

Through a conservative, painstaking approach, Dr. Cappuccino greatly minimizes your risk of complications. However, some degree of risk exists with every surgical procedure. Potential risks may include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, temporary numbness, seroma, asymmetry, loss of nipple sensitivity, and poor cosmetic results.

Will my insurance cover my breast lift surgery?

As a general rule, breast lift surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not likely to be covered by insurance. There must be proof of medical necessity, as is the case when heavy, enlarged breasts cause back, neck, and shoulder pain, and a breast reduction is prescribed to alleviate symptoms.

How long do the results last?

The longevity of your results will depend on a variety of factors, including your overall health, your degree of skin laxity, and the age at which you underwent your procedure. Some patients find their results last over 15 years, while others may need to seek a revision after just 10 years.
